SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Junior Ryan DesRoches, who pinned four of his five opponents in the Fullerton Open last Saturday, has been named Coca-Cola/Cal Poly Athlete of the Week.
DesRoches pinned his first opponent in just 11 seconds and followed with three more falls in 2:15, 4:28 and 2:56 before capturing the 165-pound title with an 8-6 decision over Lucas Espercueta of Stanford.
DesRoches is now 9-0 on the season with six falls. He competed in the Cal Baptist Open on Oct. 23 and won each of his three bouts, two by fall, en route to another first-place finish.
A year ago, DesRoches posted a 34-10 record with 17 falls. He placed third in the Pac-10 Championships at 174 pounds and qualified for the NCAA Championships.
This week, DesRoches is ranked No. 12 by WIN Magazine at 165 pounds and No. 17 by The Open Mat and No. 19 by InterMat.
Cal Poly returns to action Dec. 3-4 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
