SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly's wrestling team is ranked as high as No. 16 in the national polls this week while five Mustangs are listed in the individual rankings.
Co-head coaches John Azevedo and Mark Perry have guided the Mustangs to No. 16 in WIN Magazine's Tournament Power Index, a measure of how a team will do in tournament competition.
Amateur Wrestling News has ranked Cal Poly No. 18 while WrestlingReport.com places the Mustangs 19th. The Mustangs are receiving votes in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll.
Individually, the Novachkov brothers are receiving the highest rankings.
Boris Novachkov (pictured above) is ranked No. 5 at 141 pounds by The Open Mat (formerly D1collegewrestling.net), No. 5 by WrestlingReport.com, No. 6 by both WIN Magazine and Amateur Wrestling News and No. 9 by InterMat. Novachkov is 5-0 on the year, placing first in the Fullerton Open over the weekend.
Filip Novachkov, who has yet to wrestle this season, is ranked No. 4 by Amateur Wrestling News and WrestlingReport.com at 133 pounds, No. 5 by InterMat and No. 6 by WIN Magazine.
Ryan DesRoches, who pinned four of his five opponents en route to the 165-pound title at the Fullerton Open, including a fall in just 11 seconds, is ranked No. 12 by WIN Magazine, No. 17 by The Open Mat and WrestlingReport.com and No. 19 by InterMat.
Barrett Abel, the transfer from UC Davis who was a Pac-10 champion a year ago, is ranked No. 15 by InterMat and WrestlingReport.com at 157 pounds, No. 16 by The Open Mat, No. 17 by WIN Magazine and No. 18 by Amateur Wrestling News. Abel is 4-1 on the year, finishing second in the Fullerton Open.
Atticus Disney, a transfer from Minnesota and 5-0 on the year, has earned a No. 10 national ranking at 285 pounds by Amateur Wrestling News, No 11 by WIN Magazine, No. 15 by The Open Mat, No. 16 by WrestligReport.com and No. 17 by InterMat.
Nick Fisher drew a No. 29 ranking at 149 pounds by WrestlingReport.com while Ryan Smith is ranked No. 28 by the same Web site. Fisher has yet to wrestle this season while Smith sports a 1-0 record.
Cal Poly returns to action Dec. 3-4 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
