OREM, Utah -- Cal Poly wrestlers Drew Meulman and Ryan Smith earned first-place finishes at the Utah Valley University Open on Saturday.

Competing at 197 pounds, Smith was seeded second and won each of his three matches by decision en route to the Outstanding Wrestler award.

After a first-round bye, Smith defeated Leland Pfeifer of Wyoming in a 15-4 major decision, then decisioned Trevor Rupp of Utah Valley 6-2 in the semifinals.

Smith (pictured above), a junior, upset top-seeded Nick Bayer of Northern Colorado 10-5 in the championship final to lift his season record to 10-4.

Meulman only needed a pair of wins to claim the 285-pound title.

After a first-round bye, Meulman won by injury default in the semifinals against Paul Buchanan of Grand Canyon, Seeded second, Meulman upset top-seeded Konner Knudtzen of Northern Colorado 10-4 in the championship final.

Meulman, a freshman, is 11-6 on the year.

Cal Poly returns to action Friday with a 6:30 p.m. dual meet against Reno Tournament of Champions team champion Wyoming in Mott Gym.
