Meulman, Smith Capture Utah Valley Open Titles

OREM, Utah -- Cal Poly wrestlers Drew Meulman and Ryan Smith earned first-place finishes at the Utah Valley University Open on Saturday. Competing at 197 pounds, Smith was seeded second and won each of his three matches by decision en route to the Outstanding Wrestler award. Co-head coaches John Azevedo and Mark Perry have guided the Mustangs to No. 16 in WIN Magazine's Tournament Power Index, a measure of how a team will do in tournament competition. SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Junior Ryan DesRoches, who pinned four of his five opponents in the Fullerton Open last Saturday, has been named Coca-Cola/Cal Poly Athlete of the Week. DesRoches pinned his first opponent in just 11 seconds and followed with three more falls in 2:15, 4:28 and 2:56 before capturing the 165-pound title with an 8-6 decision over Lucas Espercueta of Stanford. OMAHA, Neb. -- Cal Poly senior Chase Pami is the sixth NCAA Division I runner-up in Mustang wrestling history. Trying to become the third Division I national champion, Pami led 2-1 early in the first period, but eventually fell 6-4 to top-seeded J.P. O'Connor of Harvard in the 157-pound final Saturday night at the Qwest Center Omaha.
